Ingredients
1 cup brown sugar
½ cup honey
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
⅛ a teaspoon of nutmeg
10 medium apples, peeled and cut into large chunks (approximately 2 1/2 pounds)
To make
The slow cookers prepare not only meat dishes for dinner. Make a sweet, juicy apple butter spread that's perfect with toasted English muffins or served on top of pork chops. Try it once, and you'll never believe it's fat-free.
Combine all the ingredients in a 5-liter electric slow cooker. Cover and cook on low heat for 10 hours or until apples are very soft.Place a large fine-mesh sieve in a bowl; pour a third of the apple mixture over the sieve. Squeeze the mixture through a sieve using the back of a spoon or ladle. Remove the pulp. Repeat the procedure with the remaining apple mixture. Return the apple mixture to the slow cooker. Cook uncovered over high heat for 1 1/2 hours or until the mixture thickens, stirring occasionally. Spoon into a bowl; cover and refrigerate for a week.Cooking option on the stove: Mix all the ingredients in a roasting pan. Cover and cook over medium-low heat for 1 hour or until apples are very soft, stirring occasionally. Strain through a sieve, as indicated in the recipe in the step, return the mixture to the mold. Cook uncovered over medium-low heat for 15 minutes or until thickened, stirring frequently.
