½ cup whole buttermilk
⅓ cup sour cream

¼ cup chopped fresh green onion, divided
1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt, divided
1 pound raw cavatappi paste
10 bacon slices, cooked and chopped (about 1 1/2 cups)
2 cups chopped romaine lettuce (from 1 head)
1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved (1 1/2 cups)
3 ounces hot grated cheddar cheese (about 3/4 cup)
½ cup thinly sliced shallots (from 1 [3 1/2 oz] shallots)

To make

What's the secret to a pasta salad that everyone will want to try? Home gas station "ranch". Here's your brand-new side dish for a backyard barbecue, co-op, or picnic. The people in the test kitchen liked this Bacon Ranch pasta salad so much that they took it home, and we think it has something to do with our herb and garlic ranch, which perfectly coats the vegetables and pasta. Speaking of dressing, leave some on the side dish for serving, especially if the pasta salad will be stored in the refrigerator for a while — sauces tend to thicken when cooled. Serve with burgers, grilled chicken, ribs, or anything else you grill in your backyard.
Whisk together the mayonnaise, buttermilk, sour cream, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, 2 tablespoons parsley, 2 tablespoons spring onions, and 3/4 teaspoon salt in a medium bowl. Refrigerate the Ranch dressing until ready to use.Prepare the pasta according to the instructions on the package. Combine the cooked pasta, bacon, romaine, tomatoes, cheddar, shallots, and remaining 2 tablespoons of parsley, 2 tablespoons of spring onions, and 3/4 teaspoon of salt in a large bowl. Drizzle the Ranch dressing over the pasta and stir to coat. Serve immediately.
