Ingredients
7 oz wholemeal baking flour (about 2 cups)
1 ½ teaspoons five-spice powder
½ teaspoon kosher salt
½ teaspoon baking soda
⅔ cup packed dark brown sugar
½ cup softened unsalted butter
1 large egg
¼ cup powdered sugar or turbinado sugar
To make
Look for five-spice powder in the spice department or along with Asian products at your grocery store. We love the glitter of powdered sugar that covers the outside of cookies; you'll find it in craft stores. Turbinado from the supermarket is also suitable.
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Whisk together the flour, five-spice powder, salt, and baking soda in a medium bowl. Set aside.Beat together the brown sugar and butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Beat in the egg. Add the flour mixture and beat on low speed until smooth. In a medium bowl, add the powdered sugar. Roll the dough into 25 balls (1 tablespoon each); roll in sugar to coat.Place the dough balls 2 inches apart on 2 baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350 ° F until it sets and starts to brown around the edges, about 12 minutes. Cool on baking sheets set on a wire rack for 2 minutes. Transfer the cookies directly to a wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
