Ingredients
½ cup. apple cider
1 pound nutmeg or red grapes
3 (2-inch) cinnamon sticks
10 whole cloves
1 (1 inch) piece of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
⅛ a teaspoon of ground allspice
¼ teaspoon anise seeds or 1 star anise pod (optional)
Side dishes: apple slices, cinnamon sticks, star anise pods
To make
Fresh grapes sweeten the cider and give it a beautiful amber hue. To make a drink for adults, stir in 1 cup of rum just before serving.
Put the first 7 ingredients and, if desired, anise seeds or star anise pod in a closed 4-quart saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low; remove the lid and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Mash the grapes with a potato masher. Cover and let stand for 15 minutes. Pour through a fine wire mesh sieve into a heatproof jug; discard dry matter. Serve hot or cold.
