Hamburger Steak with Onion Gravy

Ingredients

1 pound ground sirloin
½ teaspoon salt, divided
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, divided
1 tablespoon canola oil, divided
1 ½ cups vertically sliced onion
2 teaspoons all-purpose flour
1 cup unsalted beef broth
2 tablespoons thinly sliced green onions (optional)

To make

Serve with instant mashed potatoes with green onions, smoked beans and mushrooms.
Divide the beef into 4 equal portions, forming each into a 1/2-inch thick patty. Sprinkle the patties evenly with 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat; stir to coat. Add the patties; cook for 3 minutes on each side or until they are lightly browned; remove from the pan.Add the remaining 1 teaspoon of oil to the pan; stir to coat. Add the vertically sliced onion; simmer for 3 minutes or until lightly browned and tender. Sprinkle the onion with flour; cook for 30 seconds, stirring constantly. Add broth and remaining salt and pepper; bring to a boil. Return the patties to the pan; reduce the heat to medium, partially cover, and cook for 5 minutes or until the gravy thickens slightly. If desired, sprinkle with green onions.
