Infused Vodkas

Ingredients

Various spices (see below)
2 cups vodka

To make

Russians are known for drinking undiluted vodka, but there is also a tradition of seasoning vodka with herbs and spices. Our infusions range from traditional cumin to updated saffron-orange infusions. Use 2 glasses of vodka with any of the drinks listed below. Mix vodka and flavorings in a jar and store at room temperature for at least two days or up to several months. Refrigerate in the freezer before serving.
Anise vodka: Add 2 whole star anise and 1 tablespoon of anise seeds to the vodka.Vodka with cumin: Add 2 tablespoons of cumin seeds to the vodka.Ginger vodka: Add 6 peeled quarter-sized slices of fresh ginger and 1 teaspoon of grated fresh ginger to the vodka.Hot Chili Vodka: Halve 1 washed fresh habanero or other hot chili pepper lengthwise through the stem; add half of the chili to the vodka. Habaneros are very hot; if you are sensitive to heat, replace them with a milder chili pepper, such as jalapeno.Vodka with lemon and coriander: Lightly crush 1 tablespoon of coriander seeds in a mortar or using the bottom of a heavy glass and add to the vodka with 1 tablespoon of crushed lemon zest.Vodka with pepper: Lightly crush 1 teaspoon of single or multi-colored peppercorns in a mortar or using the bottom of a heavy glass; add to the vodka.Vodka with saffron and orange: Add 1/8 teaspoon of loosely packed saffron strands and 1 tablespoon of crushed orange peel to the vodka.
