Mulled Cranberry-Apple Cider

Ingredients
4-cup cranberry juice cocktail
4 cups apple cider or apple juice
3 tablespoons brown sugar
5 (3 x 1 inch) strips of orange peel
8 whole cloves
4 whole pieces of allspice
2 (3-inch) cinnamon sticks, cut in half
1 whole nutmeg
To make
A peeler with a rotary blade is great for removing orange peel. Be sure to remove only the colored part of the peel that contains aromatic oils, and no more; the white core is bitter.
Combine all the ingredients in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil; cover, reduce heat, and simmer 30 minutes. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve and remove any dry matter. Serve the cider warm.
