Quick Apple Dumplings

Ingredients

1 ½ cups sugar
2 cups water
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, divided
½ teaspoon ground nutmeg, divided
¼ cup butter or margarine
⅔ cup sugar
2 packs of 15-ounce chilled slices
8 medium-sized apples, peeled and cored*
3 tablespoons butter or margarine, chopped
Vanilla ice cream (optional)

To make

Fill your chilled pie cakes with apple slices, spices, and sugar to make delicious apple dumplings that are actually quite easy to make.
Bring 1 1/2 cups sugar, 2 cups water, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg to a boil in a saucepan over medium-high heat, stirring constantly; reduce the heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and add 1/4 cup butter. Set the syrup aside.Combine 2/3 cup sugar, remaining 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, and remaining 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg.Cut the cakes in half and roll out into 8-inch circles. Place 1 apple in the center of each circle. Sprinkle each one evenly with the sugar mixture; spread 3 tablespoons of butter evenly.Spread the batter over the apples, pinching to seal. Transfer to a lightly greased 13-inch x 9-inch baking dish. Drizzle with syrup.Bake at 375 ° C for 40-45 minutes. Serve with vanilla ice cream if desired.* You can substitute Golden Delicious or Granny Smith apples.
