Southern-Cooked Rutabagas


1 (2 lb) rutabaga, peeled and diced
3 cups water
¼ pound salted pork, washed and sliced
1 teaspoon sugar
½ teaspoon salt
⅛ a teaspoon of pepper
Add pepper

To make

Combine the rutabaga, water, salt pork, sugar and salt in a roasting pan. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat; simmer uncovered for 35 minutes or until the rutabagas are tender. Drain the water. Remove salted pork; discard.Add 1/8 teaspoon pepper to the rutabagas; mash until desired consistency. Sprinkle with more pepper.
