Healthy Chili-Cheese Dogs

Ingredients
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, finely chopped
2 teaspoons chili powder
1 8-ounce can of tomato sauce
1 15-ounce serving. peel and rinse canned red beans
Salt optional
8 hot dogs with turkey or chicken in raw form
8 toasted whole grain hot dog buns
½ cup grated low-fat cheddar cheese

Your kids will love these healthy chili cheese sausages! Raw hot dogs cost a few dollars more than regular ones, but they're worth it. They contain less fat and sodium and no nitrites.
Heat the oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and ground chili pepper and simmer for 30 seconds. Add the tomato sauce and beans and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer until the sauce thickens, about 10 minutes. Season with salt if desired.Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the hot dogs and cook for 5 minutes. Dry well, place on buns, sprinkle with chili and cheese, and serve immediately.
